Essex is extremely close to London being our capital city. There is a lot of choice in Essex, whatever your interests might be with Entertainment, Archaeology, History, Coastline, Seasides and picturesque countryside for walking in and cycling. Essex boasts an amazing nine country parks, plenty of busy towns and beautiful villages. There really is everything you need here in Essex.
Chelmsford is the County town in Essex. The town has one of the best shopping centres in England.
Colchester has an "Essex Tourist Information Centre" in Queen Street. Colchester is the oldest town in Britain, with people settling since as early as the 5th Century BC. Traditionally, Colchester has been associated with its flowers, cloth weaving and oysters. The town has a Norman castle with a museum and the Dutch Quarter where the Flemish settled in the early 16th Century.
Essex has a sunshine coast - these towns include Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, and Harwich. Lots of families flock to Clacton-on-Sea, as it has miles of golden sandy beaches and the pier with lots of fun activities. Another great beach to visit would be that of Walton-on-the-Naze, boasting the second longest pier in the UK.
Basildon boasts shops, businesses, hotels, pubs, restaurants, clubs, cinemas, theatres, children's entertainers etc. The town is 26 miles east of London. It gives its name to the District which also includes the towns of Wickford and Billericay. Basildon was generated initially to take the "overspill" from overpopulated areas from the East of London. The town boasts one of the largest Children's Playcentres in the UK and has a variety of Children's Entertainers for hire.
The biggest town in Essex is in Southend-on-Sea. The seaside has over seven miles of light encrusted seafront. Famous for having the longest pier in the world. There is the charming fishing village just past Southend called Leigh- on-Sea. Local fishermen bring in the day’s catch, which can be sampled in many of the Pubs and Fish counters.
Brentwood is in the South of Essex and is a bustling town with shopping and leisure facilities. Countryside is all around this beautiful town, and is part of the "Green Belt". A short walk from the centre of the town, there are lots of woods and commons.
Saffron Walden, is a picturesque town, in the north west of Essex. It has the largest church in Essex, which dates from the saffron industry in the late 15th Century. Contributing to the town’s charm is the market and many timber buildings.
Braintree has a busy market and is great for shopping, restaurants, arts and entertainment. The town has lots of countryside and has good walking & golf.
Thurrock is in the South East of Essex. Being both on the river and right next to London, Thurrock is served with excellent communication links such as the M25 London Orbital Motorway, the high speed rail links leading to the Channel Tunnel; the local railway line providing direct access to Central London, the Port of Tilbury and the City of London Airport. It is home to the regional Lakeside Shopping Centre with its award winning retail outlets and Children’s Playcentre. The historic Port of Tilbury is home to Thurrock Thames Gateway and new towns such as Chafford Hundred are bringing lots of families to the area.
